Christy

"There's a buzz in the city," the papers are claimin';
there's a ball game today, the Giants are playing.
Gonna head down to the Polo Grounds,
but you won't find a ticket, Big Six is on the mound.

Not long ago there was no need
to have your tickets bought in advance.
They didn't always have a thirty game winner
somebody had to take a chance
on the kid from Norfolk…the Virginia League.

He came to the Bigs already well known,
but seein' is believin' as history's shown.
Things weren't looking good, he beamed a few hitters,
McGraw made the call, he knew he had a winner.

Buy a bag of peanuts and a player program,
McGraw hasn't looked back since.
By nineteen hundred one Big Six had shown them,
he found himself a winning pitch
it was called a fadeaway…and they knew it worked

When Christy threw a no-no
Oh, let me tell ya little something about it.
Twas quite a feat at twenty two,
but it seemed as though he'd done it before…
and Connie Mack fell on his back,
said "I sure wish he'd play for the A's"
and the crowd cheered, "All Right Now!"
and they wondered, "would he do it again?"

Gimme four dogs two with, two without,
and a couple more beers, "Strike Two! He went around!"
Caught him looking past the warning track,
got him with the fadeaway, he couldn't pull back.

A kid looked up at him with quite excited eyes,
then he scrambled for an autograph.
He tossed Big Six a ball, Christy threw it back
he said I can't wait to show my Dad what I got today…
to put in the sock drawer.

Christy got attention wherever he went;
pitching in a pinch, his strength always well spent.
Nineteen hundred eight he had his best season,
the stadium was full you knew he was the reason.

Then he went to Boston where he met Cy Young head to head,
who would win the day?
You know it warmed his heart and was a dream come true
when ten thousand came to see him play,
some remembered the time…do you remember the time?

When Christy threw a no-no

and the crowd cheered, "All Right Now!"
and they wondered, "would he do it again?"

And I remember playing catch with my Dad back when I was ten…
He'd throw a deep fly ball, "I can catch it," "Yes, I know you can."
The ball found my glove, I did not hesitate, "Burn it in here son, there's a play at the plate."

"Well son we got two tickets for the ball game go and get your hat…
and don't forget your glove," "We might catch one" "Well imagine that"
Green grass, hotdogs, bats, baseball player's spit…
Dad took my hand and showed me where he used to sit…

Christy threw a no-no
some said it was his rookie year.
and Connie Mack fell on his back,
said "I sure wish he'd play for the A's,
we could use, we sure could use,
a guy to win us thirty games."
And he played and he played, day after day,
he put on a show and you know,
the crowd cheered, "All Right Now!"
and they wondered, "would he do it again?"
